Dating back to 1949, healthcare services have been available at the current site of Southern Humboldt Community Healthcare District (SHCHD) in Garberville, California. SHCHD currently includes:
- Jerold Phelps Community Hospital with its attached skilled nursing unit;
- Southern Humboldt Community Clinic, a certified rural health clinic;
- Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center, located at Redway Elementary School;
- Garberville Pharmacy, a full-service retail pharmacy located at the Sprowel Creek Campus
Our service area is approximately 775 square miles and includes the communities of Alderpoint, Blocksburg, Garberville, Harris, Honeydew, Miranda, Myers Flat, Leggett, Petrolia, Phillipsville, Piercy, Redcrest, Redway, Shelter Cove, Weott, Whitethorn, and Zenia. With strong community support, including a supplemental property tax, SHCHD continues its work to assure quality healthcare for residents and visitors alike.
The hospital received Critical Access Hospital (CAH) designation status in March 2002, helping position SHCHD for a more sustainable future.
Direct services include an acute care hospital, 24/7 emergency room, laboratory, radiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, mammography, x-ray, CT, ultrasound, behavioral health, home health/visiting nurse program, swing-bed, visiting specialists, skilled nursing, a rural health clinic, the Family Resource Center, Garberville Pharmacy, Fortuna Optometry, and Garberville Optometry.
