SoHum Health Makes Major Investment in Their Employees by Increasing Wages and Benefits

By ,

In order to continue to meet the healthcare needs of the Southern Humboldt community, SoHum Health has taken several notable steps in recent months to invest in their greatest asset, their staff. The Healthcare District’s Governing Board voted at their January meeting to increase the pay scale for all SoHum Health employees so that wages will be in line with other local healthcare facilities. The starting entry-level wage for a job that requires no experience, has been increased to $18 per hour. Nursing wages were increased by the greatest margin, as the need for quality and experienced nurses remains the highest priority for Jerold Phelps Community Hospital.

SoHum Health is also offering mileage pay to all employees at a rate of $.20 per mile. With a significant portion of employees commuting to Garberville from Fortuna, Eureka, and elsewhere, this mileage pay will serve to relieve the burden of paying for gas.

SoHum Health recently implemented a new student loan and education reimbursement program for employees. Employees can receive a non-taxable payment of up to $5,250 per year to pay back student loans or education debt. Reimbursements are also available for certifications and continuing education for staff members who wish to advance their careers.

“SoHum Health has been in a very strong financial position for the past few years, but our job isn’t to make a large profit. Our role is to offer excellent healthcare services to our community. We think the best way to do that is to reinvest some of the profits we have made back into our staff, so that we can continue to raise the bar and be the best we can be for our patients,” said CEO Matt Rees of the recent changes.

SoHum Health will be holding a “Coffee with SoHum Health” event in Eureka and Fortuna to meet with potential job prospects.
